More information
Ballooning is a great experience to include during your safari. To get the most out of your safari and the balloon flight, we recommend that you book the balloon flight only if spending at least 3 nights in the national park, and to book on the second day of your trip. This way if the scheduled flight must be cancelled, you will still be able to fly on the last day of your stay, while also enjoying the rest of your planned activities. Accommodations further away from the Reserve may not make possible to carry out this activity, so before reserving the balloon flight, check that the camp includes ballooning as an optional activity. 04:00-05:30: Between these times the transfer from the camp to the take-off point takes place. You must reconfirm the pick-up time the evening before with the safari guide. 06:15-06:45: The balloon will start or have started to be inflated. The pilot will give a brief explanation about safety measures in the balloon. 06:45-07:45 Just before sunrise, the pilot lights the burners to begin the flight over the African savannah. The route will be dictated by the wind direction, so no two flights are the same. For the same reason the exact landing point can vary. The duration of the flight can also vary depending on the weather and the topography of the terrain below, but flights normally last between 45 and 60 minutes. 08:15-08:30 You land and descend from the balloon. Depending on the landing point it may be necessary to make a short transfer to breakfast. On other occasions you only have to walk a short distance to the table where breakfast is waiting for you. 08:30-09:30 breakfast in the African savannah. Sometimes the balloon team decides that this might be a better time for a sparkling wine toast, although let's be honest, any time is a good time for a toast. Breakfast consists of fruit, eggs cooked out on the savannah, bread toast and other items. And coffee or tea, of course. Following breakfast, you will be transferred back to the camp where you are staying, in time to start your safari.
Schedules
These times are an estimate which vary with each flight and even with each month. The flight normally takes off at sunrise so these schedules may be subject to variations.
Flight altitude
Although all aspects of the flight are dependent on the weather, where possible, the pilot considers a height at which wildlife can be observed from the air safely and without disturbing the animals.
Take-off and landing manoeuvres
These are the 2 most important manoeuvres during the flight, especially during the landing. Due to the characteristics of the balloons, the landing involves impact with the ground. Sometimes after landing the passenger basket may be dragged along the ground, this is more normal in windy conditions. Therefore it is important to follow the pilot's instructions and the restrictions for people with reduced mobility or who are unable to kneel down quickly.
Weight
The basket in which the passengers and pilot are accommodated in the balloon is designed for a maximum number of people and a maximum weight. For this reason, people weighing more than 119 kg must occupy 2 spaces in the basket and pay double the price.
Restrictions
The minimum age is 7 years old. Due to the peculiarities of the basket that houses the passengers, only children who are over 120 cm tall can access the balloon. Minors measuring less than 120 cm cannot be accepted in the balloon. The balloon flight is not suitable for pregnant women or people with reduced mobility. It is essential to be able to kneel quickly during take-off and landing manoeuvres.
