More information
The aerial views that can be obtained from the Namib – Sossusvlei area when taking a balloon flight are simply spectacular. Approximately 45 minutes before sunrise transfer from the camp to the meeting point (usually the office of the balloon company) and to the inflation and take-off point of the balloon. When the Sun begins to rise the balloon will be inflating. The pilot, if he has not previously given an explanation of the safety measures, will give them once the balloon has been inflated. At dawn the pilot lights the burners to begin the flight over the African savannah. The course taken will be dictated by the direction of the wind, so there is no equal flight. For the same reason the landing point is unknown. The flight lasts between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on the weather factors of the day, the orography of the terrain that is flown over, the wind and the distance. After taking in the incredible views of this fascinating region, you land and then proceed to a traditional breakfast that includes a sparkling wine toast. Around 10:00 – 11:00 in the morning you are expected to be back at your camp, although depending on the strength of the wind the balloon may have flown a long distance and therefore these times may be different. Because the plane flights to Swakopmund, Damaraland, the Skeleton Coast, Kaokoland or Etosha have a time from the aerodrome around 09:50, in order to make this balloon flight we recommend you to spend 3 nights in Sossusvlei. If you only want to spend 2 nights, then you will have to do the Sosssusvlei during the afternoon though we consider this visit can be better during the morning. If, on the other hand, you decide to continue your trip to Swakopmund in a rental vehicle (approximately 4-5 hours of driving) you can spend 2 nights in the chosen camp and carry out the activity on the day of departure. It is important to keep in mind that the times and indicated duration are estimates, so they could vary. To perform this activity it is necessary to have the ability to stand for at least 60 minutes. You also need to be able to kneel down and stay in this position for a few minutes. Anyone who has knee problems that make it difficult or impossible to kneel with agility should not book this activity. We also do not recommend this activity for pregnant women. Due to the peculiarities of the basket that houses the passengers, only children who are over 120 cm tall can access the balloon. Minors who measure less than 120 cm are not accepted, they can be accepted in the balloon.
