The Murchison Falls occur where the Victoria Nile River reaches a small gorge about 7 metres wide and 43 metres high. The base of the falls can be reached by boat, while 4×4 safaris will take you through the savannah.

In the north of the park, the landscape consists mainly of savannah with patches of palm trees, acacias and mangrove forest. In the south, dense, ancient jungle forms the territory of up to nine species of primates, among them the black and white colobus, the red-tailed cercopithecus and the chimpanzee.

Up to 451 different species of birds have been recorded in the wealth of habitats found in the Murchison Falls National Park, including the rare shoebill.
