Skeleton Coast
ICONIC REGION OF NAMIBIA
The Skeleton Coast is one of the most iconic regions in Namibia. From the Hoanib Skeleton Coast camp there is a beautiful tour that crosses the landscape dominated by dunes and dotted with oasis, until it reaches the coastline. Here you can photograph the sea lions, before taking a small plane over the coast.
THE FAUNA OF THE COAST AND DESERT
Many decide to venture into this inhospitable region of Namibia for the chance to encounter elephants and, with luck, to observe some of the last remaining desert lions. Giraffes, oryx and leaping gazelles are the most frequent animals on 4×4 tours, aside from the sea lions on tours that go all the way to the coast.
SHIPWRECKS
The name ‘Skeleton Coast’ evokes the rusting hulls of the many ships wrecked in these waters and washed up on the coast over the centuries. The harsh climatic conditions and the strength of the tides have meant that, in most cases, only scraps remain, so it’s best to limit expectations.
