From the shores of the famous Lake Tanganyika, in Western Tanzania, rise the Mahale Mountains that give the name to the National Park. It is home to one of the largest populations of chimpanzees in the entire African continent.

Located southeast of the famed Lake Victoria is the island of Rubondo. The largest island-based National Park in Africa is home to elephants, giraffes and sitatunga, as well as a colony of chimpanzees who have found sanctuary on the island.

A lifeline during the dry season, animals from the surrounding area flock to the Silale swamp in the heart of the park to feed, bath and drink in the waters of the Tarangire river; the only source of water in the region during the dry season.

Often described as a natural Noah’s Ark, the expansive crater of this extinct volcano provides home and shelter to an estimated 30,000 animals.
